Amy aka Chili's Update 6-7-2009
Hello:
I adopted Chilli (formerly known as Amy) back in March at an adoption event in Fairfax. She was a little
reserved at first -- in fact she was so laid back that I had to change her name to include the word "chill!"
But week by week her personality came out until she became the sweet and charming girl she is today. She loves
her beds and making her toys squeak as loudly and for as long as possible. And while she doesn't exactly love
her feline siblings, they co-exist peacefully and seem to appreciate each others' company. She loves her walks
in the woods most of all and c.an hardly contain herself when she gets her first whiff of nature. The beagle
nose definitely takes over!
Thanks Lost Dog and Cat Rescue for helping me find my Chilli Dog. There is no doubt that both our lives
are the better for it.

Emma aka Heidi's Update 6-7-2009
Crown Princess Emma of Arlington (formerly Heidi the Sheltie Mix)
Woof, everyone! My name’s Emma, but you might remember me as “Heidi the Sheltie Mix.” My Mom saw me online
and went to PetSmart in Falls Church hoping I would be there. The dog gods took favor with us that day and not
only was I there, but I also really liked my Mom. She seemed to have a very comfy lap, a leg fit for the best
of chins, and a tendency to not mind face lickings, plus she brought along a human grandma for me who really
really like me! It was an instant love affair.
Lost Dog wasn’t sure about me or my past, and I was not telling them anything. They told my Mom that maybe
I had been a street dog my whole life! Maybe I was not housebroken! But the secret I was keeping from them
all was that I am a trained dog, both house broken and well behaved. I know the basic words like come, sit,
walk, treat, and car ride! I also knew the first night when it was bed time that Mom could not possibly be
serious when she pointed out a bed for me on the floor and told me not to get into her own bed. So I ignored
her and jumped into bed with her and cuddled – not moving all night long. It’s been the same every night since
then. No sleeping on the floor for this Royal Princess!
Mom now also lets me on the couch - heehee. But I know to only go there when my dog blanket is covering the
pillows. And I always ask permission first, staring her down until she says, “Up up” and I know I can curl up
and sleep. But my favorite part of the day is Apple Time! Mom and I cut up an apple and share the pieces
together. It’s a nice afternoon snack, and I look forward to it.
I don’t like to play with toys much and this concerned my Mom, so she took me to a dog park to see if I would
play with other dogs. What fun! I ran around and sniffed other doggies, but always kept Mom in sight and came
back to her on my own without having to be called. Recently I also got to spend the night with my dog cousins.
Oh boy, those two Keeshond mixes are now my favorite friends. They have a yard and play soccer! I can’t wait
for a lifetime of visiting those girls.
My Mom keeps calling me “good girl” so I guess that I am. All I know is that I don’t mind when I need to
get tick drops or ear drops for an infection or be fed heartworm. I just take it because Mom is giving it to
me. And then she rubs me and pets me and lets me crawl on her lap. So what’s not to like? I also don't bark
or pull at other dogs or people on walks, and then after the walk, the rubs and pets and love come again. So
if all that makes me a good girl, then keep it coming!
That’s it so far from me, Emma. Next month I go to Obedience Training at Woofs! I am looking forward to
that, although I think that the training is more for Mom’s benefit than my own. I am already well behaved,
after all. So thank you Lost Dog for bringing my Mom and me together. Our two lives will never be the same,
and we are happier for it!

Johnny and Mugsy aka Andy's Update 6-7-2009
Hi Everyone, I just wanted to give you a quick update as it has been 5 years since we adopted Johnny
in May 2004. We found Johnny on your website a few weeks before we moved to DC and as soon as we had the
chance we came to your adoption event in Four Corners. As soon as we saw Johnny we knew he was the one for us.
Johnny was returned to LDCR several times due to his separation anxiety and we were encouraged to foster him first,
but we knew he was ours no matter what. Johnny has been quite challenging, putting the famed Marley to shame, but
he's come so far. I've seen him climb chain link fence, open the gate at the dog park, jump off of a six foot
high fence and remove pins from a pin cushion without injury just to eat the cushion. He's quite impressive! But
with crate training and a lot of love and patience, his behavior is much improved. But he'll always have that
same Johnny “spirit” and we wouldn't have it any other way.
Another thing that helped in improving Johnny's behavior was our adoption of his brother and partner in
crime Mugsy (formerly Andy) from LDCR in January 2004. When we got Mugsy he was coming off of a week long
journey, first showing up at a man's house begging for food and refusing to leave. Then the man turned him
over to animal control and LDCR picked him up. We saw him online and went to meet him in person the next morning.
We were sold! Mugsy was very timid at first and very scared, but with a lot of love and patience he's a spirited
fun loving little guy. We believe he suffered abuse prior to finding his forever home, which he still shows
signs of. He has gotten over his fear of having his belly touched, which is were I think he was kicked, but he
still shakes and hides if there is any yelling or loud noise. If we yell at the vacuum cleaner, Mugsy hides.
But we're still working on that.
Johnny and Mugsy are also very well traveled. My husband is in the US Marine Corps so they've lived in DC,
Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Okinawa and now California. They are the best of friends, even though Mugsy
wants to play much more than Johnny does! And now, they have a new brother of the human kind. Mugsy loves him
so much and takes every opportunity to snuggle him.
LDCR keep up the good work and thank you so much for our babies. Also, thank you for taking Johnny back so
many times, not many people would have done the same. We are so grateful and love our boys so much. Please know
that they are happy, healthy, well feed and, most of all, loved.
Thanks again to LDCRF for everything that you do!

Willow aka Duncan's Update 6-7-2009
Hi:
I have given Duncan a new name, he is now Willow and he definitely knows his name.
He is doing very well, he and Pepper have gotten over all their hurdles and are getting along like best friends!
He is such a joy has made himself right at home! After the lights go out at night, the two of them run all over
the house until they exhaust themselves...
He is quite spoiled, along with the rest of them!!
Willow has definitely found himself a new home here with us, and fits right in with Chloe(jack russell),
Sidney (am eskimo) and of course Pepper(tortie).
Can't imagine life without him!!
Thank you so much...

Zoe's Update 5-24-2009
I adopted Zoe (formerly known as "Puddin'") back in February from the Fair Lakes PetSmart and am
happy to say that she has completely become a member of our little family - and is even an obedience
school graduate! We go on long walks in the afternoons now and I have discovered a whole new side to
my neighborhood (and she definitely lives up to her nickname "The Little Monster" when I skip out on
her walk!). It's been amazing to watch her transform from a timid little thing to an outgoing,
balanced dog - and definitely has made me a believer and advocate of adopting shelter dogs.
However, the story was not always so good. One week after bringing the "little monster" home,
she slipped out of her collar and darted out onto oncoming traffic. I spent the next harrowing
36 hours scouring the neighborhood looking for her, but to no avail. Just as I was about to
(literally) send out the bloodhounds - guess who showed up on our front door? (Guess she was
hungry...) From that point on, there was no question that Zoe was going to be my little monster
forever - and she would need a bigger harness!
Thanks again to LDCRF for everything that you do!

Alvin aka D'Artangan's Update 5-17-2009
When we first started talking about wanting to add a dog to our family, it was Christmas time and
we were out shopping and having dinner. We stopped by the local PetSmart to pick up a Gift
Certificate for a friend of ours and one of the LDCR Adoption events was wrapping up. We walked
around happily petting all of the dogs, and then this little dog called "Alvin" came slowly walking
off of Santa's lap and over to us. Somehow he made it the whole day without being adopted (?!)
He crawled into my lap and promptly went to sleep. We loved him instantly, but didn't want to
add a dog to our home out of "impulse" so decided to take his information with us. He was set up
into a foster home shortly and I began emailing back and forth with the foster mom. We met them
at another adoption event about a week later and took him home with us. We named him D'Artagnan
(call him Tanner) and found out that he wasn't actually a Min Pin as we had been told, but a
Manchester Terrier!
We walk him about 2 hours every day (so much energy!) and take regular
trips to the dogpark. He has some issues from being on the streets (lots of scars and even a
beebee (sp?) lodged in his ribs that we found when we got a chest x-ray!) but he is a great dog
and has been very attentive to training. Already he knows "sit", "stay", "down", "leave it",
"look" and has learned to wait patiently in doorways to be invited through them. We love him
dearly and especially love taking him on vacation with us in the mountains where he does quite
well off leash and loves to lay out in the sun. Now we can't imagine our life without him (or
remember our life before him)! We hope to someday add another dog to our family, but are working
out the details on that one :-P We're also talking about possibly becoming a foster home for other
LDCR dogs. We've stopped by LDCR booths at both the Pet Expo and the Reston Pet Fiesta to donate
and say hi and we're so proud of all of the work that you guys do! Keep it up!

Buster's Update 5-17-2009
I convinced my husband to start looking at dogs for our family. He was determined that we were
only looking. But on 9 May we asked that Buster be at the PetSmart in Fair Lakes. It was all over.
Buster joined the family on 9 May! He is such a laid back guy. He wishes his new "sisters" -
Zelda and Campbell would play with him. They don't know what to do with the new 60 pound cat that
moved in but everyone is getting along.
Buster loves his long walks and his doggie bed. He is a perfect gentleman. Billy loves his
new best friend and Buster loves his little boy. He is a great addition to the family. We are all
very happy that Buster has decided to keep us.
Thank you LDCRF for all you do for the cats and dogs.

Toby and Sydney's Update 5-17-2009
Hello all! Just wanted to provide an update on our two LDRF adoptees, Toby and Sydney! We
adopted Toby (Jack Russell Terrior mix) in the spring of 2008, and he immediately filled the void
left after losing our previous dog. In the beginning, Toby was very loving with us, but hesitant
and uncertain around strangers. He got very anxious whenever we left the house, so in December
2008 we decided to get him a companion. Enter Sydney, a precocious year-old spaniel mix.
Immediately, they were inseperable! They play, eat, and sleep together (of course, they are in
the bed with my husband and I - good thing it's a king size bed!). Toby has improved tremendously
on his seperation anxiety, and Sydney also helps to "break the ice" with strangers, since she loves
everybody! They are a true joy, and I recommend LDRF to everyone I know who is thinking about
adding a furry member to their family!

Robbie aka Macho 'sUpdate 5-11-2009
My husband tricked me into going to Petsmart one cold January evening. We had no pets at the time
but sometimes just liked going to look at the animals. Little did I know that my life would change
forever after that trip.
We found Robbie, n/k/a Macho. He was very shy and scared and we were told to proceed with caution.
After a few weeks of us getting to know each other, I have to say, he completely consumes our love
and attention. He has turned us into crazy, obsessed dog people!
When we saw on his papers that he was recovered from a dump in Fredericksburg, we knew we had to
spoil him! And boy is he spoiled! He enjoys soft comforters and blankets especially. He does
not like snow and barely tolerates rain.
Thank you to the Lost Dog Rescue Foundation. They are fantastic! We also want to thank his foster
family, the Howards. We know how hard it was for them to give him up.

Louie's Update 5-11-2009
Hello Lost Dog & Cat!
It’s me Louie with another update on how I’m doing. I was diagnosed with Feline Diabetes about
a year ago and was feeling poorly, not to mention sluggish. I was having a lot of trouble walking;
I wasn’t able to walk on my toes anymore and was walking on my ‘hocks’ (bottoms of my back feet)
instead. I wasn’t able to get up and down the stairs (Mom had to carry me) or jump up on my favorite
pieces of furniture for naptime. I also lost a lot of weight--I went from 20 pounds to just 12
pounds, and too quickly too. It took Mom and my doctor a while to figure out the right amount of
insulin to give me, but once they did I started to feel a LOT better.
Now to my walking problems. Mom went on the Internet (thank god Al Gore invented it, ha-ha) and
did some research on my condition. She found a wonderful website that told a story about a cat
named Jasper who had the same problem as me. The website said to give me a Methyl B-12 vitamin
once a day to correct my foot problems. Now I can walk on my toes again (like every cat should),
I can RUN up the stairs and can even jump up on the couch! I’m eating great again and have since
put on 3 pounds. I’m now 15 pounds, which is the weight the doctor wanted me to be when I was
first adopted and put on my diet, and Mom and the doctor are very pleased by my progress. Here
are a couple new pix of me for your amusement, ha-ha!

Bentley and Dizzy's Update 5-11-2009
Dear LDCRF,
We’ve been meaning to send in an update but life. has been so busy with two fabulous puppies to
play with! We wanted to update you on the marvelous adventures of Bentley (17 months) and Dizzy
(12 months), both adopted from Lost Dog in 2008.
We are one of the lucky families that got to adopt a sweet-tempered lovable, 10-week-old lab mix
named Bentley (one of Laci’s pups), the second week of February 2008. “Bentley Griffin” has turned
out to be the most amazing dog in the world and our whole family is head-over-heels in love with him.
He's now a year and a half old and is a mellow, well-behaved, loving pup. We can't imagine life
without him! He has grown like a weed since we first adopted him and is now 63 pounds. Although
Bentley probably takes the cake for “Most Distractible Puppy,” he proudly completed puppy
kindergarten, puppy basic obedience, and intermediate obedience training at WOOFS! Dog Training.
Bentley is naturally a bit cautious and prefers hanging out at home with the family to excursions
around the neighborhood, but this hasn’t held him back from enjoying life one bit – he loves romping
through the back yard, playing fetch, and visiting doggy day care any chance he can get! Bentley
loves to run so much that in the summer of 2008, we decided to move to a house with a much bigger
yard so that he would have more room to romp and play with us.
As we were getting ready to move in August 2008, we learned that one of Nora's pups, Dizzy (AKA
Goldie), was available for adoption through Lost Dog. Dizzy was an adorable four month old beagle/lab
mix (who coincidentally looked just like a shorter version of Bentley – white markings and all!) We
had worked with the trainers at WOOFS! Dog Training when we adopted Bentley so the opportunity to
adopt a puppy they had fostered seemed like a wonderful opportunity to add another member to our
family. What a wonderful decision that turned out to be! Bentley and Dizzy are a fantastic pair
- they run and play together, play-wrestle, zoom around, and have a great time together and with
our family. Both pups are great with our 9 year old son, and the entire family loves hanging out
in the back yard of our new house, playing fetch with the dogs.
Dizzy is super-smart and enjoys clicker training and learning new tricks. She’s the most confident
dog we’ve ever met – very sure of herself and her rightful place in the universe. Fortunately, the
folks at WOOFS! did a fantastic job talking with us about Dizzy’s dynamic personality before we
adopted her, so we were well aware that Dizzy’s perception regarding her rightful place in the
universe is that she should be queen. J With love, training and consistency, Dizzy has settled
into life as a confident (rather than bossy) dog, although occasionally she still tries to boss
us around by barking at us to get us to do her bidding! Dizzy loves hiking in the woods down the
block, and she never tires of romping, running, and investigating the universe. Dizzy and Bentley
love to play tug with their rope toys and play chase in the back yard. She’s grown to be a big dog
– shorter than Bentley but already 60 pounds. Dizzy and Bentley enjoy playing in the back yard with
our dog walker every day, and they get tons of exercise. Every day is an adventure for them!
Thank you so much for making it possible for Bentley and Dizzy to come into our lives. They
are fantastic pups, fabulous companions, and treasured members of our family. Thank you!!!!!
Take care-

Sasha aka Lizzie's Update 4-27-2009
Lizzie (formerly known as Sasha) came to live with me in October 2008. We quickly became best
friends. Her relationship with her two kitty sisters, on the other hand, has been rather strained
from the start, but we're working on that! The first week Lizzie was with me, she was an extremely
shy, quiet dog. But boy, this didn't last for long. She quickly came out of her shell and her real
personality came through. She is loving, playful, cheerful, and at times, downright goofy. She makes
me laugh every day. Lizzie and I are doing clicker training together--what a fabulous way to bond
with your dog! Her most recent accomplishment was learning the concept of left and right. What a
smart dog!
Lizzie's favorite things: playing with squeaky toys, riding in the car, going for long
walks, running at the park, barking at squirrels and rabbits (and any other critters in sight),
sleeping under the covers at night in my bed, sleeping in her own fleecy bed (see picture), wagging
her tail, having training sessions, and eating. I'm so grateful to have her in my life.

Casper aka Maxwell's Update 4-24-2009
Dear Lost Dog and Cat Rescue,
We adopted our dog Maxwell about 4 months ago. He was previously named
Casper because of his clear blue eyes and white hair. We love him
soooo much. The amount of love he has brought to our family is
unimaginable. He gets along great with our other dog Biscuit, and they
sometime snuggle together on one bed! Heres a great picture of the 2
of them together.

Bailey aka Shyla's Update 4-24-2009
Hi there!
My husband and I adopted Bailey (renamed now as Shyla) from Lost Dog and she has been a dream come true for us! She is a
3 yr old Cocker and is such a joy to be with. She has adjusted to her new home and family
beautifully and has gotten so attached to us, that we feel like we've had her forever! We just
wanted to thank Lost Dog Rescue and to her former foster parent Janet Siniard for giving us the
opportunity to be there for Shyla and for helping us out with the whole process! This being our
first dog, we had tons of questions and all of you were there for us to give us suggestions and
the chance to be great doggy parents!
